An archetype is a repeating behavioral pattern that becomes infused in cultural and social structures. When a pattern is repeated often enough it becomes universal and serves as a template from which it perpetuates itself. Archetypes are neither good nor bad. They are neutral patterns. If you are unconscious of your behavior then that archetype is operating in the shadow, just beyond your awareness. Bringing them to your awareness transforms the pattern. Some common examples of archetypes: The Servant, the Gambler, the Lover, the Hero, the Detective, the Warrior, the Magician, the Wounded Child, the Healer, the Rebel and the list goes on and on. Every living person is expressing certain archetypal patterns of behavior. To discover these in yourself can be life changing. To recognize them in others can dramatically improve relationships. Each of us has a set of patterns or archetypes that make up what we call “our personality.” They are embedded far deeper into our psychic makeup than simple personality features and they shape who we are, who we can become and how we express our unique selves in the world at large.
